Iliotibial Band Syndrome
Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is a condition frequently seen and treated by the experienced and dedicated team at Edward Murphy Osteo, and is a condition that affects the knee joint, causing pain on the outside, or lateral area of the knee.
The Iliotibial Band, which is also commonly known by its abbreviated term, the IT band, is a soft tissue that exists along the side of the thigh, stretching from the pelvis right through to the knee. When there is friction between the IT band and other underlying tissues, which is most commonly experienced during the bending and straightening motion of the knee joint, irritation and inflammation of the area can occur, which can then be identified as Iliotibial Band Syndrome.
Athletes who through the course of their sporting activities perform repetitive movements, such as running or cycling.

snapping sensations with patients often describing the “IT band snapping”, particularly over the knee during motion such as bending and straightening.
Part of our treatment processes include utilising well developed manipulation techniques to release tension in muscles such as the hip flexors in order to activate and strengthen supporting muscles in the same area. We also encourage our patients to actively rest from strenuous activities to allow the knee time to heal and relax, particularly given the repetitive and overuse nature of the syndrome. We also use gentle techniques and strategies to encourage correct movement as a preventative measure so that the instances of our patients suffering from iliotibial band syndrome is significantly reduced.
